Lakes Entrance Students 'Growing Together' Print

Lakes Entrance Students Jaime-Lee and Mingara Lakes Entrance Secondary College students Jamie-Lee Munro and Mingara Wandin recently joined 40 Year 9 students from all around Victoria to complete a nine week residential leadership program at the School for Students Leadership – Snowy River Campus in Marlo.

The program focuses on personal development, leadership, teamwork and students participate in a variety of challenging activities. The curriculum includes both indoor and outdoor classes such as beliefs and values, first aid, thinking and learning, living sustainably, indigenous perspectives, peer skills, coastal environment, hiking, surfing and canoeing.

Students are selected based upon their Community Learning Project which they manage before, during and after attending the Snowy River Campus. Community Learning Projects are created by the students to benefit an area in their home community which they feel needs their support.

Jamie-Lee and Mingara designed a project called ‘Growing Together’ which involved planting indigenous plants at Lakes Entrance Secondary College with the help of Grade 6 and Year 7 students and they have almost completed the final stage. Each garden bed represents a different Gunai/Kurnai clan and ancestor poles have been made which will soon be placed in each bed.

The girls have put in a huge effort to complete this project and have been fantastic role models to the rest of their school community.
