Snowy Lessons - Mountain Biking Print

Mountain Bike RidingAt the Snowy River Campus (SRC), our hard tail mountain bikes allow us to have all sorts of adventures throughout the Marlo Plains and surrounding districts.

Firstly, the students complete a half-day Cycle-On Bike Ed lesson, which gives them all the basic skills to control a bike and ride in group formations. Once complete, the students can ride on our very own on-campus single trail, which was designed and built by past students.

Other biking options include rest day rides along the old coast road and through the Cape Conran Coastal Park.

One of our key uses of the bikes is as part of the SRC environmental program. One example is when students undertake a day long exploration of sustainable forestry. Using mountain bikes as a sustainable form of transport, the students visit a recently harvested logging coupe. Here, they explore different land management classifications, vegetation types and the features and aspects of a logging coupe that is being managed sustainably to support the timber industry. The journey then ventures through the Cabbage Tree Palms reserve, a rainforest area with unique vegetation, before taking the afternoon to enjoy a leisurely bike ride back to campus. The information and experience gained from this day contribute to the end of term logging debate.

Our bikes are also regularly used as an alternative means of transport to some off-campus activities, which helps to promote environmentally sustainable habits.
