Terang SC Year 9 Student Leadership Team on a ‘special’ leadership journey Print E-mail

Our school leadership team at the Snowy River Campus consists of Tegan, Brett, Mahni, Tom and Isaac. The reason our team came to the School for Student Leadership is because we all wanted to become better leaders and to expand our knowledge of how we think together and separately, we wanted to learn life and leadership skills. We also would like to learn more about ourselves and expand our horizons.

Our Community Learning Project (CLP) is to help the special students from the local Special School get more involved in the community as we think that they are often a lost part of our community. As a whole we will achieve this by running some activities with the special students with a focus on developing relationships with our P4 campus and the Hampden Special School.  The P-4 campus and the Hampden special School share the same school grounds as it is but we feel they don’t have enough time to form friendship bonds with them.

Our team’s vision for our CLP is to make the students and other people around see the students from the special school as normal people and not as different but as equal people. Our motto is ‘better relations, better minds’. This motto is relevant to our cause because most people we have met see people with disabilities as ‘lesser’ people, so we feel that we need to change their attitudes by getting them to get more involved with the special students and broadening their minds and understanding. The reason we choose this project is because the special school is often not involved in the community and not many people have an Idea what goes on in the school or understands people with disability. So we thought it would be a good idea to bring light and recognition to the school.

CLP Team - Terang Secondary College

Here is a photo of our CLP team. We all come from a small town called Terang which is about an eight-hour drive from the Snowy River Campus.  As a team we get along well which is a good thing. When we are working on our CLP we get the work done in the time given to us.

The way the Snowy River Campus is different to our school and a normal school is that every day we have a two student leaders who leads the student community and presents throughout the whole day goals, the program and the duties which we have to do every day which could be from doing dishes to feeding and putting the away the chooks.

Also, Snowy is different from a normal school because we stay on Campus for most days and get up at 6:30am and go to bed at 9:30pm. We have expeditions where we leave the campus for three days and go hiking or canoeing and also do other outdoor activities including surfing and indoor classes focusing on how we learn best. To date, our time at the Snowy River Campus has been great and I would recommend the experience to anyone.

Local Learning Project Day - 9/11/16 Print E-mail

This Wednesday Snowy River Campus had our LLP day which stands for Local Learning Project. Orbost Primary School came for the day and we all had the best time with them. The task was for us to get into small groups of about three and create a presentation for our local primary school kids. We were all given a topic we had to teach the kids about. Some of the groups presentation were rock pools, bush safety, native animals, whale and lots more. We were all really eager for LLP and when the day came everyone was excited.

The day started off by us getting our buddies and playing games with them. After a few games each we got into our rotation groups and went to our first class with the kids. We then moved onto the second class after about 20 minutes and then sat down and had morning tea with them. It was great because everyone was getting to know the primary school kids and I enjoyed getting to know my buddy and all of the other kids. We then had rotation 3 and 4. I really liked interacting with kids, I loved planning the presentation and teaching the kids about the local area. I hope the primary kids learnt a lot and took something away from all of our presentations. We all had lunch and then said goodbye.

My highlight for the day was after lunch playing Food and Water and a big game of tag with everyone. We all had so much fun and it was a great way to finish off the day. LLP was a great learning experience for us being the teachers and learning to keep our presentations interesting. All in all, it was a wonderful day and a beneficial learning experience.

Phoenix P12 Community College Blog Print E-mail

Our Phoenix P-12 Community College team comes from the Ballarat area. The whole team came to the School for Student Leadership (SSL) Snowy River Campus to gain leadership skills, find ourselves, gain social relationships and teamwork skills. The members of our team are Mitchell Collins, Amber Dennis, Trisha Frankie, Sharon George, Kobie Judd and Hayley Page. While here at the School for Student Leadership we are creating a Community Learning Project (CLP). Our title is ‘The Phoenix, The Student and The Wardrobe’. Our vision and motto is to see everyone in school uniform ready to learn and if students don’t have the appropriate school wear because they can’t afford it, they shouldn’t be punished. We hope all students can be assisted by ‘The Phoenix, The Student and The Wardrobe’ team and to give help to those who need it. Our Community Learning Project (CLP) is to start a uniform fund full of second hand clothes to sell at a cheaper price to less fortunate families. We chose this topic because at school many students are being told off for not wearing the right school uniform. At times this is because their families can’t afford the uniform. This project will benefit our school by helping less fortunate families get school uniforms and will keep their children out of trouble.

Some of our team highlights so far would be leaving home to attend this school for the term. Some of my personal highlights have been Canoeing, Bridge Building, Surfing, eating cake, meeting new people, Halloween, Coastal Environments and the Thinking and Learning classes. All of these classes have been teaching us problem solving, teamwork and organisation.. and the cake tastes pretty good!!

Swifts Creek P-12 College Blog Print E-mail

We are the team from Swifts Creek P-12 school. Here at Snowy we have Jai, Ronan, Jade, Taledo, Jos and myself Indi.

Swifts Creek is situated on one of Australia's greatest drives, the stunning Great Alpine Road in Far East Gippsland, Victoria, some 370km east of Melbourne by road. Swifts Creek P-12 school is a small school of 150 people. In our Year Nine class we have nine students. Six of the students in my class came to the Snowy River Campus and another three students went to the Alpine Campus. We didn’t really plan on coming but our principal told us we all had to go. None of us really wanted to go but I think we were more interested as it got closer. Now we are here we are really enjoying it.

For our Community Learning Project (CLP) we have decided to put up shade sails on the side of our pool. Our name for our project is ‘Swifts Creek Sun Smart Shade Sails’. Our motto is healthy skin happy swim. We hope to achieve this by doing fundraisers to raise money for purchasing the shade sails. Our ideas for fundraising are a pool party, a raffle at a local pub, and possibly chocolate boxes. We aim to raise about $1500!

Some of our team highlights so far are going to the beach to explore rock pools, surfing, movie nights, making new friends and when Jai caught a shark fishing.

It’s quite different here because we don’t have core subjects we live here as well as work and socialize here. Each day we have 3 classes and have lots of free time. We do fun activities and are around new people for 10 weeks. Some of the key things we learn are about social skills, responsibility and to be more independent and the food is really great!

School For Student Leadership

School for Student Leadership is a Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET) initiative offering a unique residential education experience for year nine students. The curriculum focuses on personal development and team learning projects sourced from students' home regions. There are four campuses in iconic locations across Victoria. The Alpine School Campus is located at Dinner Plain in the Victorian Alps. Snowy River Campus is near the mouth of the Snowy River at Marlo in east Gippsland. The third site is adjacent to Mount Noorat near Camperdown in Victoria’s Western District, and is called Gnurad-Gundidj. After consultation with the local aboriginal community, this name represents both the indigenous name of the local area and an interpretation of the statement "belonging to this place". Our fourth and newest campus, currently known as the Don Valley Campus is located at Don Valley, Yarra Ranges.

Our school community acknowledges the Gunaikurnai and Monero-Ngarigo people as the traditional custodians of the land upon which our school campus is built. We pay our respects to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their Elders past and present, and especially whose children attend our school.
